My last day in South Africa before returning to Australia. Today I travelled from Mafikeng to Johannesburg International Airport (formerly Jan Smuts). The route I took was Lichtenburg - Coligny - Krugersdorp.
I have covered just short of 6,000 kilometres in my rent a car on this trip and never felt threatened despite the media and recorded daily car hijackings.
The Business Day's weekend paper, The Weekender ran a two page feature on the Griquas and my book "Children of the Mist" endorsing its historical accuracy and reflecting that it is a work that retells early South African history from a Griqua perspective.
I was at the airport by 2pm and by 5 was on my way to Perth leaving some wonderful friends and memories behind.
