Day twenty three - Johannesburg,
25th October 2007

A very early 5.15am start (on the road) for the trip from Griquatown to Bloemfontein. while the road was good, the weather perfect I spent over seven hours driving today.

Today was my final launch at the Trevor Barlow Library in the coloured suburb of Heidedal. It was, without doubt, one of the the best presented launches arranged for my book.

Elizabeth had done a fantastic job and the large audience of about 50 included the Griqua Kaptyn of the Orange Free State.,Johannes Kraalshoek; the General Manager of Libraries in the OFS, Mr Thithi; several researchers from the University of the Orange Free State including Dr Mike Bester and staff from Fascination Books in the Mimosa Mall. The staff, Magda de Vries and her aide, Janine, had been instrumental in the planning of this event.

The launch went exceptionally well and after my presentation I had to time to exchange emails and chat to several key members of the local Griqua community.

Then, at about midday, it was the long drive back to Johannesburg. I arrived at the Metcourt airport hotel, part of the Emperors Palace complex, at about 5pm.

Had a message from Timothy Twidle in Plettenberg Bay that The Herald ran an excellent article on my book launch at Kranshoek. The article is in the mail.

After some catch up work I met my children Kerry-Leigh and Richard for dinner.

Then had a walk through the large sprawling casino where, a few weeks ago, about 15 Africans armed with AK47s stormed in and stole millions of rand in front of terrified gamplers. More at this link. All this was history and the pokies rang merrily as people lined up to thrown their savings away.

To bed by 9.30pm - big day back to Australia tomorrow.
